It is critical that we all be aware of the
symptoms of herpes, because it is one of the most common STD's all over the world. Unfortunately, the disease is also incurable once you have contracted it. Because it is such a common disease and once you get it you'll have it for a lifetime, it's important that you are able to recognize
herpes symptoms.
While the symptoms of herpes are often visible and indeed painful, you cannot be completely assured whether you or your partner is actually infected or not. The reality is that even though symptoms may not be apparent, and the person who has the disease may not be aware of it, but the disease can still be very transmissible. Genital herpes can be contracted from even a single act of unprotected sex. Thus, it is so very important to use condoms during sexual contact, particularly if you have multiple partners. In addition, if you suspect at all what you may have contracted the disease by exposure to someone with it, it's important to be tested as soon as possible.
The Initial Outbreak
If you've been exposed to the disease, the first symptoms are likely to appear within two weeks of contact. Generally, the first outbreak is often the most severe and the symptoms will be readily apparent. If you're exposed to the virus and it enters your skin or membranes, it will immediately begin replication. The first physical outward signs are often inflamed blisters or bumps that are normally quite painful. They may appear around the mouth or in the genital area. The actual outbreak of blisters may be preceded by neuralgia type pain and itching, Once the blisters have erupted they will accompanied by a burning station in and around the affected area. Some people experience a tingling feeling prior to physical outbreaks.
These blisters or bumps of appear on or near the penis and in or around the vagina. Blisters can also appear in the surrounding surrounding areas of the anus, scrotum, the buttocks, the cervix, uretha and thighs.
In addition to the physically apparent blisters and bumps, many people experience flu like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, fever and muscle aches. Also, penal or vaginal discharge may be experienced along with pain during urination. Far and away the most obvious indicator of the disease are the painful blisters, and the signs are fairly unmistakable.
Additional Outbreaks
Researcher has shown that over 85% of those who contract the disease and experience a physical outbreak, will experience additional ones. Subsequent outbreaks may be somewhat less severe than those experienced initially, and may occur less and less frequently over time. The outbreaks will generally last from 7 to 10 days from the initial indicating signs. Regardless, if you contract the disease you can continue to experience outbreaks throughout your lifetime.
Those who are unfortunate enough to continue to experience herpes outbreaks throughout their lives managed to find ways to deal with them. The severity and the frequency of outbreaks can be managed somewhat by taking anti-viral drugs like acyclovir, and the symptoms can often be treated with non-prescription
remedies for herpes medications.
Avoidance of sexual contact during an outbreak is imperative, and there is no guarantee that the disease will not be transmitted even when symptoms of herpes are not physically apparent. Sex without the use of condoms, even during periods of remission is not an acceptable option.
