There are actually more than 25 types of STDs and all are health threats to anyone. Anybody who is sexually active can have STD. This is regardless of their age and gender. In fact, the most number of STD cases reported today belongs to the young people.

If one is practicing unprotected sex and has multiple sex partners, he or she is at high risk of becoming infected with STD. sexually transmitted diseases are not only transmitted through sexual intercourse; any type of sexual act can spread STDs especially the highly contagious ones.  Aside from sex activities, STDs may also be transmitted through sharing of infected needles or medical equipments and from mother to her child at childbirth.

Sexually transmitted diseases may result to different health complications that are commonly very serious and may make one very ill. Common complications are worsening infection, infertility, increased risk for different types of cancer, brain damage, heart disease, birth defects and even death.

Anybody who sees symptoms of STD should immediately seek for medical help. Some STDs have similar symptoms which is why STD testing is important. It is to detect and know what type of disease has infected the patient. The STD test results will also dictate what type of treatment should be given to the patient. There are some STDs that can be cured using medications. These STDs are Chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis. So, if these will be detected right away, the patient will be saved from suffering further health complications that the disease may give. Common Std Symptoms are sores or blisters on or around the genital area or in the mouth, pain or burning during urination, unusual discharge from the vagina, itching, swelling, pain in or around the vagina, pain in the pelvic area or abdomen, or bleeding other than your menstrual period.

There are several things that a person can do to prevent getting infected with sexually transmitted diseases. The best way to prevent getting a STD is to not have sex. But if this is not possible, you should limit the number of people you have sex with. You should also try to choose partners who have not had sex with many other partners. You may never know who is infected or not. The use of condoms can also protect one from infection, however not a 100 percent.

Aside from these, it is also advisable to avoid injecting drugs. Avoid alcohol or drugs, since they can make you more likely to take chances with sex. And don’t douche, since this can cause germs to travel further up into your vagina.

There are several STD testing clinics now readily available to help those who needed to be tested. These are sited in different parts of U.S. These health sites aim to protect people from being infected with STDs. And also, they would like to control the spread of the disease by detecting and curing them early.
