Genital Herpes Treatments

While there are effective genital herpes treatments, the unfortunate reality is that science and the medical profession have not been able to find a cure for the herpes STD. The genital herpes virus has troubled humans for ages, and a variety of treatments for herpes have been employed over the years. Genital herpes is without doubt one of the more common STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) experienced by humans. Symptoms typically include red bumps or painful blister eruptions in and around the genital region. Genital herpes is typically associated with the herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) virus, but can also result from the HSV-1 virus that is generally associated with oral herpes, typically referred to as cold sores or fever blisters. Both varieties, once contracted, reside dormant in the body and the painful blister eruptions may be triggered by a weakened immune system and other stresses.

Drug Treatments for Herpes

Genital herpes treatments  employing drugs do not result in a cure, but can reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks of genital herpes symptoms. One of the more commonly employed anti viral medications is acyclovir. It evidently works be slowing the ability of the virus to replicate or multiply, thereby enabling the body's natural immune system to better deal with the infection. Acyclovir is employed to treat other herpes viral infections as well including shingles and cold sores. Famciclovir and Valacyclovir are other anti viral agents that are used for treatment to help reduce the spread of the virus, slow the growth and speed healing.

Alternative Genital Herpes Treatments

Other natural treatments for herpes are often employed to help strengthen the bodies natural immune system to reduce the frequency and severity of attacks, as well as to relieve symptoms. Andrographis paniculata, more commonly called "Green Chirayta", comes from India and has been employed as an antibiotic through the ages to prevent infection and speed healing. Purple Cone Flower, or Echinacea purpurea, is an herbal healer that helps reduce swelling and helps repair damage to the skin. It is also said to strengthen your immune system. St. John's Wort, or hypericum perforatum is another herbal remedy that is used to treat depression as well as to deal with symptoms of herpes.

Herpes Vaccines

Work has been going on for years to develop vaccines to prevent herpes. There are one or more candidates that are currently undergoing clinical trials with some promise, but they have no immediate prospects for general clinical use. An encouraging note is that the HPV vaccine was successfully developed and released to prevent some of the more dangerous strains of the human papillomavirus in young  women. It would indeed be good news if such a genital herpes treatments preventive measure could be successfully developed.
