Genital Herpes Symptoms

Genital Herpes SymptomsEven though more than 45 million Americans are living with genital herpes, the herpes STD can often be difficult to diagnose. Regardless most people who have the disease have likely experienced genital herpes symptoms, but as many as 80% may not have recognized, or otherwise ignored them. The principal signature of genital herpes symptoms is the emergence of small red bumps in and around the genitals. Usually, these symptoms emerge 15-20 days after exposure, and progress into painful small blisters and sores which progress to encrusting that will eventually clear up, usually in 7 to 14 days. The degree or amount of blisters can range from a single one to many. The more severe outbreaks can be very itchy and painful. The bumps or blisters may spread to or occur around the anus, and the skin in the surrounding area of the genitals. There is still no cure for genital herpes, and they are likely to recur periodically. However, there are available anti viral and herbal treatments for genital herpes which may reduce the frequency and severity of subsequent attacks.

Additional Genital Herpes Symptoms

These additional symptoms of genital herpes may occur to signal or accompany an outbreak:
  • Itching or neuralgia type pain in the genital may signal a coming eruptions
  • Significant pain and reddening
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Swelling and difficulty in urinating
  • Headache and flu like symptoms with fever
  • Swollen glands
Often, the symptoms of herpes never appear in an infected individual, and this is a principal contributor to spreading of the disease. A person without symptoms can still spread the disease due to asymptomatic viral shedding. In addition, the symptoms may be confused with other conditions such as infections of the urinary tract and yeast infections. When you experience the apparent symptoms of genital herpes STD, it is important that you consult with your medical practitioner to confirm the diagnosis and recommend a course of treatment, as well as to provide advice and information on dealing with the disease. Your physician will likely be able to diagnose your condition visually and confirm it with a herpes blood test, or viral culture. Both the HSV-1 (typically oral herpes) and HSV-2 (typically genital herpes) can cause the genital herpes condition, and HSV-2 can also cause oral outbreaks. Again, it is important to seek medical advice if and when you experience genital herpes symptoms.
